Heppner team dominates Fun Country

STANFIELD – The Heppner cross country team, both boys and girls, dominated the field, taking both team titles at the Stanfield Fun Country on Thursday, March 11 in Stanfield.

The Mustang girls outdueled second place Weston-McEwen, 15-42, with three of the top five runners. Heppner was led by junior Hailey Heidman with her second-place finish crossing the line in 22 minutes, 39.1 seconds. The race winner was Condon junior Kallyn Wilkins with a time of 21:47.4. Heppner also took third place with junior Kylie Boor and junior Hannah Finch taking fifth.

The battle for the boys team title was a little tighter as Heppner (34 points) had to hold off second-place Weston-McEwen (40 points) and third-place Grant Union (48 points).

A highlight of the race was Stanfield/Echo senior Sisay Hurty barely missing breaking into the 16-minute mark. Hurty was just 1.1 seconds away from cracking the mark, finishing the race in 17:01.1 and taking the individual crown.
