Heppner and Hermiston Battle At Bulldog Fest

The Hermiston and Heppner cross country teams battled all day, competing at the Bulldog Fest on Thursday, Sept. 30 on the course at Sandstone Middle School. In the end, Heppner barely took the boys’ team title while Hermiston grabbed the girls’ crown.

The Mustang boys grabbed the team title by a single point, 28-29 over the Bulldogs. Riverside placed third.

Heppner junior Trevor Nichols ran away from the rest of the runners, winning in a time of 17 minutes, 44 seconds. Hermiston junior Miguel Duron was a distant second with a time of 18:11.40 and Stanfield/Echo junior Jagjot Singh rounded out the top three in 19:08.40. Condon sophomore Grady Greenwood placed fourth and Hermiston senior Carson Bradshaw was fifth.

The Hermiston girls had an easy time of it, placing first with 19 points. Heppner was second, putting up 41 points.

Although not having runners to qualify for a team score, Condon senior Kalllyn Wilkins was the individual champion for the girls, completing the course in under 23 minutes, the lone runner to do so. Wilkins time of 22:36.90 outdid second-place Hermiston senior Cydney Sanchez and her time of 23:17.00. Senior Hailey Heideman had the best finish for the Mustangs in third and fourth and fifth places went back to the Bulldogs with two freshman runners. Lillian Fields picked up fourth while Makayla Thomas was fifth.
