WALLOWA LAKE STATE PARK: Quite a few teams showed up to make Bayden Menton’s senior project a tremendous success. Menton, a senior attending Joseph High School, has been running cross country since sixth grade. He writes of remembering the days when Wallowa County hosted cross country meets and losing the opportunity to run before the home crowd. Instead of reminiscing about the past, Menton revived a race for his senior project, hosting teams from throughout the state for the Wallowa Invitational on Friday, Sept. 17.

As the race was Menton’s idea and work, it seems only fitting Menton’s Enterprise boys’ team outdueled the Union team for the team title. Enterprise finished the day with 27 points while Union came in with 39 points. The 4A Baker Bulldogs were third.

Individually, Menton placed second behind teammate Zac Knapp. Knapp was the lone runner to take the course in under 17 minutes, clocking a time of 16 minutes, 20.2 seconds. Menton followed with a time of 17:43.8.

Along with Menton, Union junior Taylor Fox came in under 18 minutes. Fox, placing third, had a time of 17:57.1.

The fourth-place finish went to Pine Eagle senior Caleb Brown and his time of 18:13.1. La Grande’s top runner, junior Caleb Murie placed 11th and Baker junior Thaddeus Pepera finished 16th for the top finish for the Bulldogs. The Vale Vikings saw their team’s best finish from a freshman as Eli Belnap placed 24th. MacHi junior Ethan Jones crossed the finish line in 27th and in 31st, Nixyaawii sophomore Baron Moses was tops for the Golden Eagles.

For the girls, the team title went the way of La Grande and the Tigers’ 41 points. Union, with 52 points, grabbed second and the Baker Bulldogs were third.

Individually, the top two positions went to the Tigers as La Grande sophomore Emily Tubbs was the first to cross the line, putting down a time of 21:20.0. Fellow sophomore Kiah Carlson followed in second with a time of 21:57.4. Another Tiger sophomore, Faith Calhoun was fourth.

Sandwiched between all the Tigers was Union senior Audrey Wells in third place. Wells finished just over the 22-minute mark with a time of 22:05.0.

The top Baker runner was senior Sydney Lamb placing fifth and a time of 22:25.7. The host Enterprise team saw sophomore Iona McDonald grab 11th and for the Riverside Pirates, freshman Caelyn Pullen was in the top 20 at 17th. Nixyaawii’s top runner was senior Keyen Singer in 26th and Vale saw sophomore Harley Belnap pick up 31st for the Vikings’ best spot.
