STANFIELD – Filled with teams from around eastern Oregon, the field was crowded as runners took off at the Stanfield Fun County cross country race on Thursday, Sept. 23.
The Enterprise boys took the team title, beating the larger schools at the meet. Baker was second and Heppner took third followed by MacHi, Riverside and Umatilla.
The Enterprise boys grabbed three of the top five placements in the race led by senior Zac Knapp, the lone runner to break the 16-minute mark. In his third top finish of the year, Knapp finished in a career best time of 15 minutes, 24.9 seconds.
Knapp was followed by fellow senior Bayden Menton in second place and senior Ian Goodrich in fifth.
Splitting up the Enterprise runners were Heppner junior Trevor Nichols in third place and Pine Eagle senior Caleb Brown in fourth.
The girls race saw the Baker Bulldogs grab the best team score followed by Enterprise and Heppner.
The Bulldogs led the pack at the finish with the top four runners wearing the Bulldog uniform. Senior Emma Baeth finished first, crossing the line in 20:34.6, and like Knapp, her best time of her career.
Following Baeth was senior Sydney Lamb, freshman Sofia Kaaen and sophomore Emma Timm.
Rounding out the top five was Heppner senior Hailey Heideman in the fifth slot.
