PORTLAND – A small number of track and field athletes representing Hermiston, Joseph, Riverside, Trout Lake, Vale and Imbler recently finished up competition at the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays at Jesuit High School in Portland.
Attendance was by invitation only with minimum marks set by the organizers. Student athletes representing over 100 schools from Oregon, Washington and Idaho were battling it out over two days.
Trout Lake senior and Eastern Oregon University commit Sawyer Dean hit a new personal record in the pole vault, clearing 16 feet. The height places Dean at the top of pole vault for any classification in the high school ranks in Oregon.
In the talent laden field, Hermiston also found top 10 finishes from Ava Courtney (high jump), Avonlea Edwards (discus), Maxem Shilhanek(discus), Jaysen Rodriguez (3000 meters) and the distance medley relay team of Miguel Fuentes, Jose Juarez Rodriguez, Luis Silva Salas, Franco Gonzalez Mendoza.
Joseph’s Jett Leavitt picked up eighth in the 1500 meters while teammate Gavin Russell posted a sixth place showing in the javelin.
