Eastern Oregon Runners Go Up Against Northwest’s Best

EAGLE ISLAND STATE PARK, IDAHO – A contingent of eastern Oregon cross country runners were invited to compete against the best from Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Nike Cross Regionals Northwest. The immense competition took place at Eagle Island State Park outside of Boise.

The region’s top 22 teams and top 45 individuals compete in the championship division which included Enterprise’s Zac Knapp and Pine Eagle’s Caleb Brown for the boys. Knapp placed 18th in a field of the best 188 runners in the region with a time of 15 minutes, 50.40 seconds. Brown crossed the line in 50th and a time of 16:29.10.

The winning time of an astounding 15:09.00 went to Olympia, Washington’s Ethan Coleman.

The championship division for the girls included a Baker participant and the Hermiston Bulldog team.

Baker sophomore Emily Tubbs is now considered a top ten runner in the region after crossing the line in tenth with a time of 18:47.40. The top time for a Hermiston runner went to Megan Joyce in 73rd and a time of 20:04.90. As a team, Hermiston finished 15th in the elite competition.

The open race on the boys’ side saw 716 racers representing 76 teams take to the course. The Hermiston boys placed ninth while the boys’ team from Baker grabbed 47th.

With a time of 16:57.40, Hermiston’s Jaysen Rodriguez finished 18th with the top finish for Baker going to Daniel Brown in 247th.

The Baker girls placed sixth in the team standings for the open division with the top finish going to Cecilia Villagomez placing 20th out of the 431 runners.
