STEENS MOUNTAIN – It was not all campfires and Basque dinners for a number of eastern Oregon runners taking part in the first session of the Steens Mountain Running Camp.

Local runners joined a large contingent of campers from around the nation to take part in a 5K race in a competition rising above 9,700 feet above sea level outside of Burns. Eastern Oregon runners join a group that traces back its history to the first camp held in 1975.

EOS warns readers the times shown for your favorite runner are not personal bests. This race is an uphill torture not seen at typical cross-country courses run over your local golf course. To finish the race is success. The race is just a small part of the week long camp.

A new group of eastern Oregon distance runners will take on the identical course in session two starting this upcoming week.

Enterprise sophomore Owyhee Harguess led local runners at Steens, placing fifth in the culminating event with a time of 25 minutes, 54 seconds. Heppner picked up a top 20 individual finish with sophomore Lily Nichols placing 19th in the girls run.

La Grande senior Kiah Carlson was just outside the top 20 runners, finishing 21st and Union was led by sophomore Angel Shields-Marrs in 27th.

The Outlaws of Enterprise also found a top five finish in the boys race as junior Jett Leavitt placed fourth after crossing the line in 22:21. A duo of “old-timers” were back at the camp with Heppner graduate Trevor Nichols placing seventh and La Pine grad Wyatt Montgomery placing 14th.

Union junior Nathanael O’Reilly picked up a top 20 finish in 18th and Condon senior Grady Greenwood placed 23rd.
