The following article provides information on updated volleyball rules for the upcoming season. It is also a commentary of writing rules in plain, understandable English. After reading the new ruling numerous times, EOS finally gave up and called a few well-respected volleyball coaches for an explanation.
INDIANAPOLIS – Fans have booed from the stands. Coaches have argued the call and players have pled their case. Was it a double hit?
Addressing what the National Federation of State High School Associations states is the number one topic in volleyball, the issue of what is a double hit has now been taken out of the hands of officials with a new rule change. In a press release by the NFHS, the organization states “multiple contacts by one player attempting to play the ball will now be allowed on second contact if the next contact is by a teammate on the same side of the net.”
In what the NFHS has admitted is a “judgement” call by officials, players will now be allowed to second touch a ball after a block. In discussions with coaches, the new ruling will mainly affect setters on eastern Oregon teams.
“In addition to the impact this judgment call has had on the flow of the game, the multiple contact fault has consistently been a point of contention between coaches and officials,” said Lindsey Atkinson, NFHS Director of Sports and liaison to the Volleyball Rules Committee. “It is the committee’s belief that the elimination of this fault will contribute to less disputes between coaches and officials and ultimately benefit the overall environment of the match.”
Teams will also be allowed to say goodbye to those smooth volleyballs. Textured balls, commonly used in boys’ volleyball, will be allowed for the girls’ games. This rule will not be implemented until the 2026-27 season.
Beginning in 2029, uniform numbers must be centered on the upper half of the uniform.
What players wear under the uniform appears to be of importance. Players will be allowed to wear solid black, white or gray undergarments under a uniform if they cannot find undergarments that match the team uniform. With the exception of the libero, the entire team must wear the same color undergarment.
