HUNTINGTON – The top ranked 1A volleyball team in the state, the Crane Mustangs, saw two days and four matches come to a close on Saturday, Sept. 21 in Huntington.

On the road for two days, Crane recorded four wins over Cove, Powder Valley, Harper and Huntington over the road trip. The Mustangs downed Cove, 3-1 on Friday, Sept. 20 and were forced to only the team’s third five set match versus Powder Valley later that day, winning 3-2, a victory that included an extended fifth set at 22-20.

Up early on Saturday, the team boarded a bus and were down I84 to the Huntington gym to meet Harper in a High Desert match. A kill by Kaitlyn Siegner gave the Mustangs a 25-11 first set win with Crane going on to victory, 25-10 and 25-12.

Crane grabbed 15 minutes of rest before taking the court versus the hometown Locomotives, also a league matchup. The Mustangs grabbed the first set 25-9, going on for a win on the long day 25-11 and 25-13.

Discussing the road trip and four wins, sophomore Kendal Nichols said the match versus the Badgers of Powder Valley was “crazy and fun”.

“We knew we needed to pull that one out and finally came together as a team when it counted,” Nichols said. “We had some mistakes during the match that allowed Powder Valley back into it.”

Nichols said Crane’s next scheduled match versus St. Paul is the one she has circled on her calendar.

“They are the team we beat for the state title last season,” she said.

“Powder is one of the state’s top teams,” added Siegner. “We know we will see them again in the playoffs. We stuck together and that is what gave us the win.”

Like Nichols, Siegner is also looking forward to Thursday night at Trinity Lutheran High School for the chance to once again take the court versus St. Paul.

“We are playing better every time we take the court and still have a lot to prove,” she said.
