Crane Girls, Grant Union Boys Victorious At Prairie City Meet

Easternoregonsports.com has picked up so many new followers since last track season we need to explain a few things. Unlike other media outlets, we provide more than the top three or five finishes for events. We believe every student athlete putting the effort forth deserves recognition. The runner finishing 28th did not work less than the runner crossing the tape in first. You will find every finisher in this article representing eastern Oregon schools. Yes, it is more work and yes, the article is long. But easternoregonsports is pleased you will find your favorite athlete no matter their finish.

PRAIRIE CITY – As the buses pulled out of Prairie City on Friday, April 8, it was the Crane girls and Grant Union boys track and field teams heading home with the team titles.

The Mustang girls finished the meet with 157 points while Grant Union was second with 96.5 points. Sherman, Condon and the newest team on the block, Four Rivers, rounded out the top five.

Crane junior Taylor Joyce helped out her team’s efforts, placing first in the 100 meters, 200 meters and pole vault events. Crane also was aided in the hurdle races as sophomore Kortney Dorman took the title in both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Doman added to her day with a win in the high jump.

Looking towards the future for Crane, freshman Dally Venell outdid the rest of the field in the long jump event.

A triple winner was Sherman sophomore Sophie Hulke, throwing past the rest of the field in the discus, javelin and shot put events.

The host Panthers did get some cheering in as Prairie City junior Janie Koopman crossed the line first in the 400-meter race. Sophomore Brook Teel also placed first in the triple jump for the home fans.

The Grant Union boys had an easy day of it, scoring 142 points while second-place Mitchell-Spray ended with 87 points. Crane, host Prairie City and Condon rounded out the top five.

The Prospectors showed the team’s strength across the board, winning in sprint, distance and field events. Senior Justin Hodge was the quickest in the 100 meters with junior Brady Dole taking the tape in both the 800- and 1500-meter races. Hodge also won the shot put.

Keeping the home fans pleased, Prairie City junior Eli Wright came up three inches short of 150 feet in the javelin, but still had the longest throw of the day. Wright then ran over the high jump to take the title there and made it a trio of wins by taking the triple jump crown.
