ONTARIOOntario, Oregon was the location as two of the top 10 1A 8-man teams both took to the road in a non-league game on Friday, Oct. 7. As the two teams boarded the buses for the trips home, Crane laid claim a 80-34 victory over the Enterprise Outlaws.

Enterprise saw starting quarterback Tyler Knapp depart the game on the third offensive play. Running towards the Crane sideline, attempting to pick up extra yards, a Crane defender landed on the top of the Outlaw starter. Complaining of pain to his collarbone, Knapp was transported to a local hospital.

The Mustangs were on the scoreboard first when Jared Zander connected with Carter Nichols on a 48-yard pass play with less than two minutes off the clock. Enterprise, now led by Caden Fent under center, responded with a long drive and score when Ashtyn Irwin dove into the endzone from the three-yard line. The two teams stood tied at eight points.

The Mustangs went up 16-8 when Zander hit Cody Siegner on a two-yard pass for the score. Enterprise responded early in the second quarter with a 12-yard run by Irwin, but with the PAT no good, the Outlaws trailed 14-16.

The passing game continued for the Mustangs as with 6:04 left before the half, Zander hit Kelton Dunten for a 22-yard passing touchdown. On Crane’s next possession, a bit of trickery put points on the board as the Mustangs pulled off a reverse for a 13-yard score.

Enterprise used defense to put their next points up as Irwin picked off Zander’s pass, flying down the field all the back for the score. The score closed the margin to 32-20 for the Crane lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Carter Nichols outran the coverage to place the Mustangs back up by 20 points, 40-20.

The Mustangs started the second half with a running score by Nichols while the Outlaws answered with a 2-yard run by Irwin. With 4:49 left in the third quarter, Crane’s Jake Doman’s run up the middle put the Mustangs out to a 56-34. Doman doubled up his efforts for the third quarter to push the lead to 63-34.

It was a long run by Nichols early in the fourth to extend the lead to 72-34 and a Zander pass to Casse Roozeboom finished up the scoring for the game.

“As a team, we did out job tonight,” said Siegner. “We had a good game plan coming in and wanted to walk out a winner.”

“We played much better tonight,” said Tyler Ballard. “We tackled well and we were just in the right mind set before the game to come out and play like this.”

“This was tough,” said Enterprise coach Josh Harman. “When you lose your starter right at the beginning of the game, it is tough. I am really proud of Caden (Fent). He has not played quarterback since the eighth grade and came out and kept us going tonight.”
