ONTARIO – In the Greater Oregon League matchup pitting McLoughlin against Ontario, Mac-Hi senior Cristian Castillo finished with 7 points-a good day’s work by any measure. However, Castillo and Pioneer fans will remember only one basket. Castillo’s shot with two seconds left found the net and provided McLoughlin a 43-42 GOL win on Saturday, January 11 in Ontario.
The Tigers were on the scoreboard first in the first GOL game for both teams. Chaney Larson put Ontario up 2-0 at the 6 minute, 51 second mark of the first quarter. The Pioneers answered just seconds later with a basket from Castillo. At the end of the first eight minutes of play, Ontario led, 13-11.
The Pioneers led at the half, 21-20 with the Tigers leading going into the fourth quarter, 30-28.
Heading into the final minutes of the matchup, the two teams tied at 34 points and again at 35 points. Ontario jumped out 37-35 off a basket from Kenji Teramura at the 2:20 mark. That lead extended to four points after a free throw from Larson with 1:10 left in the game.
Mac-Hi closed to within two points after going inside to Castillo, but the Tigers again extended to four points after a basket from Teramura.
At the 13-second mark, Mac-Hi’s Marcellus Brinkley came up with a long three-pointer, cutting the Tiger lead to one. A foul on the next possession placed Ontario’s Teramura on the free throw line. Making the first one, but missing the second, the Pioneers rebounded the missed shot and moved quickly down the court. Off a miss, Castillo found himself outside the arc and put the ball up. The shot found nothing but net for the victory.
In addition to Castillo’s game totals, Marcellius Brinkley ended with 13 points followed by Hector Castillo’s 12 points.
Ontario did find success with the inside game as Bradley Nielson finished with 11 points. Teramura and Jake Hartley each had 9 points.
McLoughlin (7-7 overall, 1-0 league) also is in non-league action next, hosting 4A Corbett (6-5 overall) on Thursday, January 16.
