BEND –Being 6A and able to field a full team does have advantages as Burns, LaPIne, Nyssa and Crane discovered. Taking part in the Adrian Irwin Memorial Tournament, Mountain View dominated in the team standings, doubling second-place Burns in the points total. The Cougars ended the tournament with 453.5 points with the Hilanders putting up 220.5 points. LaPine was third with Nyssa placing fourth. The 1A Mustangs of Crane slipped in the top ten with a tenth place finish.
LaPine senior Daniel Underwood increased his record to 10-1 with a championship in the 285-pound class. Underwood pinned Nyssa’s Marlin Miles at the 1 minute, 24 second mark in the match for the title.
Nyssa did find a champion at 195 pounds when senior Adam Simpson took a5-2 decision over Mountain View’s Blake Ohlson. A second title came in the 132-pound class as senior Raul Ruiz pinned Mountain View’s Nathan Jones.
At 120 pounds, LaPine sophomore Dylan Mann remained perfect for the season at 10-0 after a pin over Caleb Potts of Mountain View and an Adrian Irwin title. LaPine picked up their third championship in the 113-pound class when sophomore Carmelo Farfaglia ended the match with an 11-5 decision over McKay’s Connor Everetts.
An additional wrestler yet to be defeated is Burns’ Oliver Barnes. The Hilander sophomore pinned Ridgeview’s Elijah Hocker at the 2:27 mark to take home the title in the 106-pound division.
