Burns Cross Country Defends Home Course

IDLEWILD CAMPGROUND – The Burns cross country team were gracious hosts for their home meet until the races started. At that time, it was all business as both the boys’ and girls’ teams claimed victory during the running of the Idlewild race on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the campground site.

The Hilanders boys, led by senior Mason Shaw, scored 20 points for the winning total. The Vale team placed second with 55 points, and by the slimmest of margins, Grant Union was third with 56 points.

Shaw completed the 5,000 meters in a time of 17 minutes, 41.23 seconds, the lone runner under the 18-minute mark. Vale sophomore Trevor Stewart, in second place, was the lone runner under the 19-minute mark with a time of 18:48.39.

With the exception of Stewart, Burns claimed the top five places with junior Carter Lardy in third, senior Spencer Johnson in fourth and freshman Carsen Volle rounding out the top five.

Junior Brady Dole was the top spot for Grant Union, placing sixth with a time of 19:33.61. Nyssa, not qualifying for a team score, saw senior Christian Mardock place eighth.

Like their counterparts, the Burns girls scored 20 points for the win followed by Grant Union in second with 36 points.

The Hilanders grabbed the top three spots in the Idlewild led by senior Olivia Winn and her time of 22:39.20. Winn was followed by senior Riley Morris and junior Mattie Woodbury in second and third.
