NYSSA – The Burns Hilanders boys basketball team will play on beyond the league season, entering the Eastern Oregon League post-season as the third seed after taking care of the Nyssa Bulldogs on Friday, Feb. 12 by a score of 41-34. Even after a loss to league leading Vale on Saturday, the Hilanders grab the third seed.

The Nyssa boys did themselves no favor, scoring zero points in the first eight minutes of play. Burns failed to take advantage, also starting slow with only a nine-point first quarter. The roles reversed in the second quarter as the Hilanders scored only four points while Nyssa started to find the range and came up with 13 points. At the half, the two teams stood locked at 13.

The difference in the matchup came in the second half as Burns settled down, putting up 13 points in the third quarter and an additional 15 points in the final quarter. The Nyssa offensive troubles of the first quarter returned in the third as the Bulldogs could only manage eight points to be followed by an 11-point final eight minutes.

Burns sophomore Zane Kozeni led the Hilanders with 13 points. Mathew Kaiser finished his night with 10 points.

Nyssa junior Andrew Enders finished with nine points for the Bulldogs.

While the Hilanders play on for a shot in the state tournament, the season ends for Nyssa. The Bulldogs close out the year with a 4-19 overall record and a 2-7 Eastern Oregon League record.
