BURNS – Distance runners from Baker, Burns and Vale compete against each other frequently during the cross-country season on a golf course or a designated course through a local town. During the past week, these runners lived together and ended the week with a 5,000-meter run up a mountain at the legendary Steens Mountain Running Camp outside Burns.
A week of training and fun culminates with the run rising up to above 9,000 feet above sea level from the camp located at 7,500 feet. Week two found runners from the three eastern Oregon teams (week one results can be found at https://www.easternoregonsports.com/eastern-elite-runners-finish-steens-mountain-run/).
A Baker junior had the top finish for eastern Oregon runners. Daniel Brown placed 19th in the field, crossing the line in 22 minutes, 54 seconds.
Burns saw three runners in the top 60 finishers. Hilanders senior Tim Banks broke into the top 50 with a 48th place finish after a time of 25:35. Junior Talon Morris was just outside the top 50, placing 52nd and a time of 25:44. Fellow junior Tanner Joyce and his time of 26:04 placed 57th.
Vale’s top finish went to senior Trevor Stewart at 71st and a time of 27:18. In a sign for the future, incoming freshman Duncan Fritts finished 75th in the standings with a time of 27:28.
The Baker girls also found top 40 finishes for the race. Junior Sofia Kaaen was the top Bulldog, finishing 38th and a time of 31:57. Incoming freshman Matty Gressley placed 40th after a time of 32:07.
The Hilanders’ girls were well represented with four runners at the camp. The top Burns finish went to sophomore Sydney White in 49th with a time of 34:38. Junior Camyrn Volle ended the day in 56th with a time of 35:39. Two Hilanders seniors crossed the line side by side and with identical times of 43:34, good enough for a tie for 73rd for Keaira Burns and Shailey White.
