BAKER – The writing appears to be on the wall this year in regional cross country meets. If the Union boys or La Grande girls show up, everyone else is running for second place in the team standings. Both the Bobcat boys and Tiger girls did attend the Baker Invitational on Friday, Sept. 30 and both squads boarded the buses home with first place team finishes.

The Union boys, led by race winner senior Taylor Fox and runner-up junior Eli Williams, ended the race a full 49 points better than second place Heppner. Enterprise, host Baker and Burns completed the top five in the team scoring.

Fox recorded his second-best time of the season, winning the race in 17 minutes flat. Williams was just over one second back at 17”01.3. Heppner senior Trevor Nichols followed in third and an additional Mustang, junior Grady Greenwood placed fourth. Vale junior Trevor Stewart completed the top five.

When the top three finishers are La Grande uniforms, the team title is a good shot. In the girls’ race, Tigers junior Emily Tubbs lead teammates Cecilia Villagomez and freshman Brooke Perry across the line. La Grande scored 27 points second-place Burns ended with 66 points. Burns, Union and Idaho’s Parma wrapped up the top five team finishes.

Following the trio of Tiger runners was youth. Heppner freshman Lily Nichols placed fourth and Burns freshman Sydney White finished fifth and was the final runner under 21 minutes.

Easternoregonsports.com is again standing out from other media sources by listing all the runners from eastern Oregon schools in the cross-country competitions. First or 41st, all these runners made it to the finish line. There is only a single runner with the best time, but there are many more stories worth mentioning afterwards.
