PENDLETON – The Union/Cove boys cross country team will have the opportunity to defend the team’s state title after cruising through the 2A/1A Special District 3 championship in Pendleton on Friday, Nov. 1.
Finishing the race with the top three runners across the line, Union/Cove ended with 19 points. Second place Stanfield/Echo, also a state qualifier, finished with 68 points followed by the Golden Eagles of Nixyaawii in third. Imbler and Four Rivers rounded out the top five.
Nathanael O’Reilly used his final district race as a senior to claim the individual championship, hitting the tape at 16 minutes, 55.7 seconds. Teammate and sophomore Ian Garlitz was the second runner under 17 minutes, posting a time of 16:57.7 for second place. Junior Mason Titter placed third to complete the Bobcat sweep.
Four individuals will also be making the trip to Lane Community College for the state meet including Heppner sophomore Jake Wilson, Weston-McEwen sophomore Arden Shaul, Pine Eagle senior Gabe Brown and Nixyaawii’s Sun Schimmel.
The Tigers of Stanfield/Echo was led by senior Landon Baily and his 13th place showing.
