Eastern Oregon University – Cooper Bales proved to be too hard to stop as the Dufur Rangers (6-3, 4-1) beat the Elgin Huskies (5-3, 4-2) 62-50 at Eastern Oregon University in the SD3 district crossover game on Friday.
Bales rushed for an astounding 420 yards on 40 carries and 7 touchdowns on the night. Over and over again Dufur was able to work the edges of the field as the Huskies had a hard time containing Bales on the sweeps.
In true high level 8-man football fashion the game was a shootout.
Bales opened the scoring for Dufur on a 20 yard touchdown run at 10:59 in the first quarter followed by a quick response 30 yard touchdown pass from Tristan Simpson to Jordan Palmer to tie up the game 8-8 a few minutes later.
After another score by Bales the Huskies answered with a couple scores of their own. Simpson found Palmer and then followed that up with another 11 yard touchdown pass as the Huskies took the lead 20-14.
In the second quarter Dufur answered right back with a long drive and 1 yard push by Bales.
With 3 minutes left before half Elgin turned the ball over to Dufur on downs at midfield only to give it right back on the next play on a fumble. The Huskies took advantage with Simpson finding Cody Harvey on a 28 yard touchdown pass with 1:32 left in the second quarter.
Just before half Dufur marched down the field and with a Bales 7 yard TD score and PAT.
As time expired for halftime Palmer made an amazing catch at the 1 yard line on a hail mary. The game was tied 28-28 at halftime.
In third quarter, Bales scored a couple more touchdowns and Palmer added a nice 24 yard touchdown run for the Huskies as the game went to the 4th quarter with the Rangers leading 40-34.
As the fourth quarter started the relentless, game long Dufur ground game was taking its tole on the Huskies defense. The Rangers continued to rip off large yardage running plays. The teams traded touchdowns as Dufur’s Jacob Peters found the end zone on a 1 yard run followed by nice Elgin drive that was capped as Palmer scored from 1 yard out.
On the ensuing kickoff the Huskies were able to recover an onside kick now down 46-42 but were unable to capitalize. After the change of possession Peters scored again for the Rangers this time from 10 yards out to put Dufur up 54-42.
Elgin was able to score once more to bring the final score to 62-50.
On the night Elgin had a lot of success through the air with Simpson passing for 335 yards and four touchdowns. Jordan Palmer had 8 catches for 233 yards.
