PENDLETON – Conditions could be considered less than ideal as the high school golf season kicked off at Birch Creek Golf Course for the Nixyaawii/Birch Creek Invite on Friday, April 8.
Led by Isaiah Jones’ top score of 84, the Baker boys golf team won the team title, shooting a team total 362. Ontario placed second in the team scores with a 402 total and Grant Union rounded out the top three with a score of 414.
One stroke behind Jones was teammate Jesse Maldonado with an 18-hole total of 85. Grant Union’s Tanler Fuller finished the course with an 86 and Ontario’s Tyce Helmick fired an 87.
Led by a second place showing by Hannah Hernandez and her score of 109, the Ontario girls took the team title with Burns placing second.
For the Hilanders, Valarie Mallonee shot the lowest score of the day, firing a 103. Grant Union’s Audrey Walker finished third in the individual standings after shooting a 117 while Baker’s Lilly Wilson was the top finisher for the Bulldogs, placing fourth overall.
For many of the teams, including the Vale Vikings, Birch Creek was the first outing.
“The conditions were very windy and cold but we seemed to battle our way through it,” said Vale head coach Tom Snook. “We were not able to have our full team due to limits on participation for this tournament. I am pretty encouraged by this group and I expect to see some really good improvement over the next few weeks.”
