NYSSA – Nyssa senior Gracie Johnson spent the last year mulling over collegiate offers to play Division I basketball-11 offers to be exact. Jump the border and play at Boise State. Head across the state and play in Portland. Pack her thermals and head to Montana.
After months of deliberation and discussions with her parents, coaching staff and others, Johnson finally put pen to paper and officially designated the Utah State Aggies as her next stop both educationally and in her basketball career. Fittingly, the formal signing came before her parents and teammates on Wednesday, Nov. 9 in the hallway of Nyssa High School.
“Utah State just felt like a good environment and just felt right,” said Johnson. “It also places me closer to my brother.”
Johnson will join her brother Isaac in Logan after the seven-foot center transferred from University of Oregon in April.
“Gracie has worked hard for this moment her whole life and we are happy she is pursuing her dream,” said father Darren Johnson.
In addition to her time on the basketball court in Logan, Johnson’s plans include a future career in the medical field.
“I plan on studying kinesiology for a career as an athletic trainer,” said Johnson.
Before she packs her bags for college, Johnson and the Bulldogs still have a season to defend their reigning 3A state title.
“I am happy for Gracie and the decision she made,” said Nyssa head coach Jeremy Chamberlain. “Gracie has been a huge asset for this team and a huge contributor to why we are state champions.”
Johnson joins an Aggies team that finished 11-19 last season under head coach Kayla Ard. Bulldog fans will have the chance to see Johnson wearing a college uniform as the Aggies and Boise State University both compete in the Mountain West Division.
