ADRIAN – Notre Dame lost out. Carroll College came close. The College of Idaho was considered but did not make the final cut. Even Eastern Oregon University’s new indoor track facility did not sway the decision. A number of highly successful track and field programs offered Adrian’s Jace Martin a spot on their team.

However, Adrian High School has a Air Force Academy member leaving in June.

On Monday, May 8, Martin made it official and signed his letter to run track at the U.S. Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs, Colorado. The decision comes after months of testing, both physical and academic, a visit to the school and long discussions with a former Antelope opponent.

“I talked a lot with Kirk Eiguren from Jordan Valley,” said Martin. “He gave me great information on what to expect and what life is like attending the academy.”

Eiguren was one of seven Oregon students accepted to the Air Force Academy in 2018. The acceptance rate into the school nationwide is 11 percent.

Martin’s journey started with a Letter of Recommendation from U.S. Representative Cliff Bentz.

“I cannot thank Representative Bentz enough for this opportunity,” Martin said. “I spent a lot of time considering the offers I received but I really wanted the academic challenge combined with the opportunity to continue in athletics.”

Martin, the reigning state 1A champion in the 100- and 200-meter races will continue running but as a Falcon. His long-term plans include a degree, law school and a career with the Judge Advocate General’s Corp (JAG Corps).

Between now and a late June date of checking into the academy, Martin still has to defend his state track title and grab a few more tips from Eiguren.

“This is what he had worked so hard for,” said Jennifer Martin, mother of the soon to be “doolie”. “The Air Force Academy does compete in the Mountain West Conference so we will get to see him when he runs at Boise State.”

(Jace Martin is one of a select few runners to go under 11 seconds in the 100 meters. The Air Force Academy record currently sits at 10.43 seconds-we will give him two years!)
