Adrian Volleyball Opens Home Season With Win Over Ontario

ADRIAN – The Adrian volleyball team made the most of playing before the home crowd for the first time this year, downing 4A Ontario, 3-0 on Thursday, September 2.

With just seven players on the varsity squad, the Antelopes and Ontario Tigers both struggled with the serve in the early season matchup. In the early stages of game one, the two teams went back and forth. Tied at six points each, the Lopes begin to pull away, leading 21-18 late in the game. A kill shot by the Tigers went just past the boundary, handing the Antelopes at 25-19 win.

Game two proved to be all Antelopes with Adrian leading from the first serve. A service error on the final point by Ontario handed the win to Adrian, 25-12.

Game three was a mirror of game two with Adrian leading from the start and a service error by the Tigers giving the Lopes a 25-13 match win.

“I think we really played with energy together tonight as a team,” said Adrian senior Shelby Sheets. “There were a few times we could have played more aggressive, but tonight went well.”

“We have improved over the last few matches,” said fellow senior Lizzy Nielson. “We are really starting to play as a team and communicate on the court.”

The offense for the Lopes was led by a newcomer to the team, freshman Addy Martin. Martin ended her night with 8 kills and 3 digs.

Sophomore Presley Speelmon had 13 assists to go with her single kill and Allyssa Dudley added 2 assists, 6 kills and 2 block kills.
