EUGENE – If you hang around track and field coaches, one plan for a state championship team is a balanced attack. Grab some team points in the sprints, maybe garner a few points in the distance events and maybe pick up a few points in the field events. Add the totals and you hope to pick up a state team title.

For first-year Adrian coach Reagan Shira, the plan was a bit different. Shira, a former speedster in his day along with his brother, saw the majority of the Antelope points in the team competition come from one source-pure speed.

The Lope boys picked up the maximum points in the sprint events to take the 1A OSAA Track and Field state team title after scoring 74 points. An old friend of the Adrian boys, the Powder Valley Badgers boys placed second and Joseph placed third making the top three an eastern Oregon sweep.

Adrian junior Jace Martin became the first 1A athlete to run the 100 meters in under 12 seconds in the history of the meet, clocking a 10.99 second race in a heat race. Martin combined with brother Conley, a senior, to go one-two in both the 100- and 200-meter races. The Martin duo teamed with Riley Griffin and Gavin Bayes to cross the line first in the 4-by-100 and relay with the Martins, Bayes and Jesse Walker also winning at the tape in the 4-by-400 relay.

Not far behind medals hanging on his neck was Powder Valley’s Kaden Krieger, a three-time state champion coming in the 400-meters, the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.

Pine Eagle’s Caleb Brown finished his high school career with a state championship in the 800 meters and Joseph’s Reece Nelson was tops in the triple jump.

If you are looking to soar above the crowd on a pole, consider Trout Lake. One of the newest members to the Oregon ranks, the small Washington high school scored not only a state title with freshman Sawyer Dean, but also had the runner-up position with Landon Heberling. Not bad for a school of 152 students in grades 5-12.

The state team title for Adrian is impressive as is the pure sweep of the sprint events by the Antelopes. Almost reminds some of us of a time of the Shira brothers some years ago. Could it be we write this story in years to come quoting Coach Jace or Coach Conley?
