ADRIAN – For the first time in school history, the Adrian boys’ basketball team is making plans for a trip to Baker to compete in the quarterfinals of the OSAA 1A state basketball tournament. The Lopes advance after a 60-54 victory over the Myrtle Point Bobcats on Saturday, Feb. 25 before a packed crowd in the Gene Mills gymnasium.
It took 16 seconds for the Lopes to jump out to a lead after a long perimeter shot found the net courtesy of Robert Garza. A follow up basket by Jace Martin pushed the margin to 5-0 as the Bobcats were not to find the scoreboard until the 7 minute, 9 second mark off a basket by Andreas Villanueva. As the first quarter closed, Adrian led 15-11 over the Bobcats.
The margin stayed the same at the half as the Lopes led 28-24 over Myrtle Point.
The third quarter saw the two teams trading baskets and with the fourth quarter halfway completed, things started to turn interesting. The Bobcats cut the lead to two points at the 48-46 mark and after a timeout by the Lopes, the score was tied at 48 points with 3:37 showing on the clock. Adrian senior Ashton Jephson promptly scored the next two baskets and with the momentum, the Antelopes finished out the game not looking back.
Jephson was dominant inside, leading all scorers in the game with 27 points. Garza added to the initial points of the game and ended with eight points while Carter Bayes finished his game with six points.
For the Bobcats, Villanueva had 22 points in the loss to the Antelopes.
Adrian (21-7 overall) now prepares for the unknown in school history-a trip to Baker High School to compete in the round of eight teams looking for a state title. While the Adrian girls have previously competed at the quarterfinals, the Lope boys will make history with a game versus North Douglas (22-5 overall), the fifth seed in the tournament.
Adrian and North Douglas will tip off on Thursday, March 2 in the Baker High School gym starting at 3:15 p.m. The Warriors of North Douglas arrive in Baker after a 54-48 victory over Lost River in round two of the playoffs and a championship run in the Skyline League. North Douglas split in their two meetings during the course of the season with Myrtle Point, the same team the Antelopes downed on Saturday.
