NYSSA – After spending a weekend in their own gym hosting the annual Hannah Cashell Memorial tournament, the La Grande volleyball team was on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 3 looking for that first win of the year in the gym of 3A Nyssa.
Capitalizing on poor serving by the Bulldogs and better communication after a close first set, the Tigers claimed a 3-0 nonleague victory.
Off the serving of Aubrey Bisenius in the first set, La Grande jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first set. Nyssa fought back and off an ace serve by Paisley Johnson, took an early 4-3 margin over the Tigers. La Grande finally took the lead for good at the 8-7 mark, going on to claim a 25-20 victory.
Set two was all La Grande with the Tigers leading 18-3 at one point and closing out the set with a 25-5 win.
Bisenius was again at the service line in set three as La Grande rolled off the first six points of the set. Nyssa was able to close the gap to within two points at the 10-8 mark before the Tigers went on to a 25-16 victory and board the bus home with the team’s first season victory.
Bisenius ended the match with five kills, nine assists, six digs to go with three serving aces. Senior Kayle Collman was perfect from the service line and added four aces while also picking up five kills and seven digs.
Junior Madison Armstrong added six kills and senior Rilley Robinson put up 14 digs while also going perfect serving. Fellow junior Madison Seavert recorded six kills and eight digs and junior Taryn Mcllmoil added two aces while serving perfect and added two kills and 12 assists.
“I liked how we finished tonight,” said Bisenius after the win. “We are playing smart this year and we are still young with only four seniors on the team.”
“This team wants to win,” said Robinson. “We know what we are capable of this year.”
The consensus of Bisenius, Robinson and Collman came at the end of the interview.
“We want to beat Baker, both at home and in Baker,” said Collman, joined in unison by her teammates. “We split with them last season and want both victories this season.”
