The high school sports season has come to a conclusion and it is time to take stock of eastern Oregon teams as a whole.

Much is debated and written about the powerhouse of the metro area or the successes of private schools on the west side of the state in the sports arena. These same discussions will continue next year and beyond, but easternoregonsports.com has decided to look at the positive of our sparsely populated area and the student athletes who achieved so much.

We gave great thought to how this article should be written. Give a letter grade out to an individual sport? Perhaps provide a numerical ranking? Compare east versus west successes? In the end, you the reader are smart enough to decipher simple facts. You don’t need us skewing numbers or making up some mathematical computation to prove the obvious – eastern Oregon teams, more or less across the board, had a great year in athletic competition. Maybe your team faltered this past year, but we are sure you know someone at an adjacent high school, a friend, a relative, a competitor who had an outstanding year. The student athletes from eastern Oregon can hold their heads high after this year-it was a hell of a showing.

We were recently asked where exactly is an eastern Oregon team? The answer is simple-we look at the districts, the special districts and we listen to you emailing or messaging us asking us to cover your team and we make the decision where an “eastern boundary” lies. Two recent examples come to mind. Originally, EOS did not cover Hermiston as they play in the Washington leagues. We were not so kindly reminded Hermiston is an Oregon town and no matter where they play, we were informed coverage was needed-we now cover the Bulldogs in all sports including varsity girls’ bowling. Secondly, parents and fans contacted us asking for coverage of Lakeview. Being about two hours from Burns, we agreed. Good move on our part considering the recent softball title game.

This article is not a critique of good teams versus bad teams, east teams versus west teams, or 1A versus 5A. This article is a reminder of just how well our student athletes from eastern Oregon performed this past year. If anything, writing down the successes truly brings into context just how good your teams performed.
