11 Heading to State After Girls Regional Qualifier

HILLSBORO – Eastern Oregon will be well represented when the Oregon Girls State Wrestling Tournament opens action on February 28. A total of 11 local wrestlers qualified for the trip after finishing in the top four at the recent North Regional Tournament in Hillsboro, wrapping up action on Saturday, February 8.

Both Nyssa and the combined team of Baker and Powder Valley led the charge with three wrestlers.

Nyssa qualifiers include Vanessa Ruiz, Junnie Morales and Noelle Acosta. Acosta took the title in the 155-pound division, pinning Centennial’s Simone Willingham at the 3 minute, 28 second mark in the final match.

Ruiz will make the trip after a fourth place finish at 120 pounds while Morales also finished fourth wrestling in the 135-pound division.

 The champion at 115 pounds is Baker/Powder Valley’s Sydney Keller after pinning Aloha’s Ortiz Nadeen at the 1:36 mark. Making the trip for the first time will also be Baker/Powder Valley freshman Kaci Anderson after a fourth place finish at 130 pounds. Rounding out the trio for the team is Bailey Cole after a third place finish in the 170-pound division.

The La Grande Tigers will be represented by freshman Delia Gulzow after her second place finish at 100 pounds. Gulzow fell to Oregon City junior Emma Baertlein by pin in the championship match.

Vale’s Tyler Richardson will be making a return trip to the state tournament after a first place finish in the 140-pound classification. Richardson downed Elbereth Ragsdale of Glencoe by pin at the 5:28 mark of the match.

Ontario will be represented by two wrestlers as both Maria Diaz and Abigail Osei will be making the trip to Portland. Diaz placed fourth at 140 pounds while Osei was the runner up at 190 pounds, falling in a 10-3 decision to Fiona McConnell of Milwaukie.

The combined team of Echo and Stanfield sends a single wrestler to the state tournament as Kaitlyn Lemmon placed third at 130 pounds.

In the team scoring, Ontario, Baker/Powder Valley and Nyssa finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. Vale placed 15th and La Grande finished in the 18th spot. Echo/Stanfield was 38th in the crowded field of wrestlers. The combined team of McLoughlin/Weston-McEwen was 49th and Adrian finished 58th. Heppner/Ione was one spot behind in 59th.
